blume

A playful, human-centred reinterpretation of a manual coffee brewer that simplifies ritual and interaction.

problem

Designed in response to a brief exploring new approaches to domestic coffee making, Blume questions why many manual brewers prioritise technical performance at the expense of approachability, clarity, and enjoyment for everyday users.

solution

Blume reimagines the brewing process as a more intuitive, tactile experience, using softened forms and simplified interactions to make high-quality coffee feel accessible, engaging, and less intimidating.

Inspired by the familiarity of the AeroPress but stripped back to its essential gestures, the design focuses on ergonomic comfort, visual clarity, and a reduced number of components. Each element is shaped to guide the user naturally through the brewing process, turning routine into ritual.

Through iterative sketching, prototyping, and form refinement, Blume was developed alongside my summer placement at Product & Brands, where the concept was tested against real-world constraints of feasibility, viability, and desirability. Feedback and industry insight informed decisions around component reduction, ergonomics, and manufacture, ensuring the product balances playful character with practical, market-aware design.
