six (oz)

A material exploration, exploring how process, labour, and material behaviour shape the perceived value and longevity of everyday objects.

problem

Six (oz) responds to the question of how designers can explore value beyond form, by examining the impact of material choice, labour, and process on perception and use.

solution

The project fixes volume and function at six ounces, producing six vessels through contrasting materials and processes to isolate making as the primary variable and allow direct comparison.

By holding scale and use constant, Six (oz) reveals how casting, forming, finishing, and material behaviour influence tactility, durability, and emotional attachment. Each vessel becomes a record of its own making rather than a pursuit of visual perfection.

Through hands-on experimentation, breakage, and repair, including kintsugi, the project embraces imperfection and time as part of an object’s value. Six (oz) ultimately positions process, care, and material honesty as central to meaningful design practice.

Six (oz) was inspired by my favourite everyday mug and a growing interest in how attachment forms through use and material presence. Following Liminal Flow, the project became a deliberate response to a period of reduced confidence in fully utilising the workshops, prompting a conscious return to hands-on making. By centring process, experimentation, and repair, Six (oz) was used to rebuild confidence in material exploration while establishing a clear foundation for my final major project.
