tree to tableware
A material-led exploration tracing the journey from raw timber to functional tableware.

problem
Developed as part of an investigation into material origin and authorship, Tree to Tableware responds to the disconnect between everyday objects and the processes, labour, and resources behind them.
solution
The project follows timber through natural forms of felling, processing, and making, transforming it into functional tableware items, whilst maintaining a visible link between raw material and finished object.
By engaging directly with each stage of production, the project foregrounds process as a design tool, allowing tool marks, grain, and variation to remain present as evidence of making rather than imperfections to be erased.

Tree to Tableware began during my gap year, before I had decided to pursue product design, driven by a natural pull toward making and material processes. Using a blank piece of timber as a starting point, the material was allowed to inform form, proportion, and finish through grain, defects, and tool interaction. Years later, the project continues as an ongoing practice, with new objects still being made as a way of refining skills, deepening material understanding, and maintaining a direct relationship between process and outcome.
